Meet Vontesha!

My name is Vontesha Stanfield. I am from Chicago, IL. I am a freshman at Indiana State University.  Go Sycamores!  I am majoring in Criminal justice because I want to become a youth probation officer but my dream does not stop there;  I also want to go to law school to become a lawyer. I have been having a great time at ISU besides the simple fact I have been a little homesick. I have met some wonderful friends that help me through my homesick stage. I moved in August 20, 2010 but had to move out the next month because my roommate went back home. I loved my first roommate for the week we were together; we could and would talk about everything. My new roommate is nice. I remember when I locked myself out my room and I could not find my roommate that experience taught me a lesson to always make sure I have my keys before I close my door. I moved to another floor but in the same building. My classes this semester are good for the most part I love my criminology class I love learning about crimes and the study of criminals. I am a little afraid of my chemistry class but I am getting all the help I can to succeed. I am also taking political science, history 1800-1877 (what was I thinking) and English. I have been here for a short amount of time but I have already got involved. I am in an organization named Sister’s Too. It is wonderful I love all my sisters and they are very supportive. We performed a dance in front of many student the week of homecoming it was so funny and I enjoyed myself. We was also in the homecoming parade it was awesome; the whole community comes out and watch organizations from ISU and the community. We also passed out candy to the children. I am having a good time in college and cannot wait to start my career in law.

Meet Dujon!

My name is Dujon Christopher Smith. I come from the wonderful city of Evanston in Illinois. I graduated from ETHS this past spring and currently I attend Pepperdine University as a pre-International Business major student. I cannot believe that I have had five weeks of class already; or the fact that I have been calling Malibu my home for the past six weeks.  When I moved into my new ocean view campus on a hill I was in awe. How could one live here and not be distracted by all of the beauty. The weather is almost always in the constant 70s with the sun in the sky. The first week was new student orientation, a time to get to know the other students, faculty, and administrators.  That week was full of exciting all day events that were tiring but at the same time entertaining. I had an amazing time and I was glad to have this week to get more familiar with the campus. Currently I am taking Macroeconomics, English, Western Humanities, Intercultural Leadership, and Chinese. They all are wonderful classes with some remarkable professors.  I am one that loves to get involved right away. So continuing on with my passion for music, I have joined the Pepperdine Concert Choir and Genesis Gospel Choir. Along with those commitments I have joined the Sports Business Association and Black Student Association. I have just finished rush week for fraternities and I am now member of Sigma Phi Epsilon (ΣΦΕ). So for the remainder of the semester I will be going through the Balanced Man Program which is their unique pledging system. I also got the wonderful opportunity to work for the Pepperdine School of Law working as an administrative assistant, with mirrored shifts with my dear coworker and friend Paige, to the Director of Information Services. I even try and do daily morning runs around the track several times with a great friend/personal trainer Ashley, who is in my neighboring dorm. Thanks a young man named Daniel I go to this great church, Reality LA, in Hollywood; which is a fun trip Sunday mornings. It’s pretty hard to do anything here in California if you don’t have a car. Being here at this school has been a true blessing. God has just being opening many doors of opportunities and been meeting all my needs.

My roommate Peter is the best. He seriously acts like a mother sometimes which I find hilarious. He always reminds me to take my key, or put a coat because it may be cold outside. I am glad that I got such a great roommate. One guy in my suite named Craig has a wonderful collection of teas from all over which is my absolute favorite hot beverage. In my suite, I also have my spiritual life advisor who is a great guy always praying for us and trying to help us strengthen our faith. The other kids are members of volleyball team here at Pepperdine and they are pretty cool guys. Pepperdine is a great school with some many people to meet from very diverse backgrounds. The diversity that I have seen here has made it such a comfortable transition from home. I have found that being here in this supportive environment all helping us to build character, strengthen our faith, and gain wisdom through understanding is a great place for me to grow as an individual. So far I love Pepperdine and being a “Wave.” Free time spent at Zuma beach, shopping in Santa Monica, touring around in Hollywood, living it up in LA is the way I can spend my time when my studies are finished.  Overall I am having a great time focusing on studies but still making time to have awesome college adventures.

Meet Yorbelit!

My name is Yorbelit Romano and I attend Northeastern Illinois University and I am a Latina( Mexico). My anticipated major(s) is psychology and computer science, also I want a minor in business. I go to school twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) but I am there the whole day from 11:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.  I have pretty busy schedule and on-campus activities are ,right now, difficult to manage. However, i am thinking of joining a sorority (Latina or multicultural).  I have already spoken with sororities and applied; I am waiting now to decide which one is the best one for me. The classes that I am taking this semester are: a Latino History, Reading, Math, Theatre, and an English class. These classes are why I have such a busy schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but it gives me more time to be able to make some friends!

Meet Nakeba!

My name is Nakeba Johnson.  I am from Chicago, IL where I graduated from the Latin School of Chicago. I am currently a first-year student at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN majoring in first-year engineering, with plans of becoming a Chemical Engineering.

I moved into my dorm about two weeks ago. Even though I have been here for a while and have gotten accustomed to campus it has yet to completely hit me that I am a college student. Even after I packed , arrived to campus with my family, waved goodbye to them as they left, and  woke up for the first time in my dorm room  it still felt surreal. However, the good thing is that I am not alone in how I feel about starting my new beginning as a college student. My roommate, Jordan, and I talk all the time about our lives back at home, and how we are slowly getting used to the swing of things. Jordan is also a first-year student. She is from Indianapolis, IN and is majoring in Organizational Leadership and Supervision in Purdue’s College of Technology.  We have gotten alone really well so far, and we also have a lot in common, which has made us living together way easier then I expected.

There are so many organizations, and activities available to participate in at Purdue.  The first three to four weeks are some of the busiest weeks on campus because all the organizations are trying to get new members and inform the first-years, and the transfer students about their group and how they make an impact on our campus. A few of my friends and I went to a few call-outs (informational meetings) to get more information on the groups we found interesting. We went to the Black Cultural Center’s (BCC) call-out to view performances by their performing arts assembles, as well as a ballroom dance team call-out. We also went to Purdue’s first-annual “Stomp the Yard” step show for the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s Devine 9 Sororities and Fraternities. There is so much available to do on campus as long as you take advantage of it.  Since the first day I have been on campus I have been really busy: getting books, going to classes, doing homework, making friends, finding my place in such a big community, and having fun.

Meet Sam!

My name is Samuel Altman and I’m from Chicago, Illinois.  I attend Northern Illinois University.  My anticipated major is business and management.  I moved in on June 14th and have gotten used to the campus.  I moved into my fall dorm room just a few weeks ago and have three roommates: Frank, Dechane, and Daron whom I get along with well.  My classes are nice; I am taking Microeconomics, Intro to Art History, Philosophy, University Experience, and EPFE.  The classes are somewhat difficult but I can handle it.  I am a member of the football team which is my primary activity as it is all that I have time for!  All in all, I really like everything this University has to offer.

You can read more about Sam and his achievements on the football field here!
